Overview
Challenge
Physical microwaves have limits: the dials and lack of record make them tedious for busy individuals who use them often; they are sometimes unsafe and challenging to use for children and people with disabilities; and there are limited cooking options on the timer for students who need to cook quick meals.
Goals
- Simplify and quicken the process of setting the accurate time to reheat, cook, or defrost your meals.
- Make the process of using a microwave more efficient and productive for busy individuals and students.
- Provide a range of cooking instructions and options to suit different types of food and cooking needs.
- Make microwaves more accessible and user-friendly for children and people with disabilities
Process
Empathize
I adopted the simple method of observing physical microwaves to determine their functions. I also read blog and academic articles to determine how people use microwaves.
To help visualize my findings, I created proto-personas, highlighting their painpoint and goals, as well as the product opportunities presented by each of them.
Define
Our research confirmed most of our assumptions, however, we made two new discoveries:
Time Saving and Accuracy
- Many users want to set the correct time on their microwave to ensure their food is correctly heated.
- Some users have specific reheat times for their regularly microwaved meals and want to know these times to save time.
- Some users are meal preppers and want to know how much time it takes to defrost their frozen meals to plan their meal prep efficiently.
Convenience and Comfort
- Some users, particularly students, want to find and prepare quick and easy meals that fit into their busy schedules.
- Some users with motor difficulties want to be able to use a microwave independently and have an easier or more convenient way to use a microwave to heat up their food and snacks.
Safety
- Some users, particularly children, want to avoid accidents and burns when using the microwave.
- Some users with motor difficulties want to be able to input the correct reheat times and settings into the microwave without straining their wrist or relying on someone else.

Logging in will enable users to save their meal reheat or cook time. They can use it across different smart microwaves they connect to
Add a Microwave
To start using Wavv, users need to add a smart microwave via Wi-Fi connection. They can add as many as they want to and switch between them as needed. They can also name the microwaves for easy access
Timer
Users activate their microwave using voice control. They can also set the timer manually. The “Quick Meal” and “Function Presets” section initiate an automatic timer and heat level.
Microwave Process
As their meals are being processed in the microwave, uses can pause, stop, or add some additional minutes. After the food is ready, they are caution to take note of the hotness of their plate
Saved Meals
Users can save the meals they regularly reheat so that they don’t have to input a time they use any microwave connected to their Wavv

Reflections
Lesson
- Panda is now Paystack’s go-to internal asset-creation tool that streamlines the asset creation processes and improves all-round employee efficiency.
- The initial users were very happy with the speed and convenience of Panda and have begun making Panda a part of their regular workflows.
- Panda has reduced the time the Design Studio team spends on the creation of repetitive design assets to zero hours. Now, the team can dedicate all the gained time to more productive and challenging tasks.
- Stacks are empowered to create flyers on the go. This saves time for them too, as they no longer need to wait for designers in case of urgent requests.
